The Great Commission

Commission is defined as an INSTRUCTION, COMMAND or DUTY given to a person or group of people (New Oxford American Dictionary).

Roberts Liardon (author of God's Generals) shares the following lesson drawing from the life of one of God’s Generals whose later years lost focus on the calling and ministry God had given.

“Never sway from what God has commanded you to do in the earth….

So if God  has commanded you to fulfill a commission,

make it your utmost priority as long as you live.”

We may not have the same calling, position, or set of gifting but there is a commission that is common ground for us all. Jesus gave it to us the Great Commission:

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.””

            Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

Have you prayerfully assessed how you are doing on fulfilling this commission?

Has this been a priority? Which areas are strengths and which areas are lacking?

How can we improve to fulfill this Great Commission, this high calling?

We cannot fulfill this commission on our own. We need the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. We can fulfill it with a  wholehearted pursuit of the Lord with a gaze fixed unswervingly on Him, not in our own strength but with His help.

“I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws, as is being done at this time.’” 1 Chronicles 28:7 NIV

Do we have a firm grip? A fixed gaze?

Have we allowed our feet to swerve or waiver? What gets in the way?

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”

            Hebrews 10:23 NIV

NOW is the time to throw off the distractions. NOW is the time to empty our hands and lay aside anything that hinders us from being with the LORD. Allow Him to establish a firm strong grip upon the Sword of the Spirt, the Word of God. Exercise the shield of faith. Keep your mind focused on the gift of Salvation, extend it to others with wisdom and boldness. Put on His Righteousness to guard your heart. Fasten tightly the belt of Truth. Make ready your feet to carry the glorious Gospel everywhere you go.

Prayer: O Lord, strengthen our knees and firmly plant us on Christ the Cornerstone. Hear our fervent cry we are desperate for YOU! We submit to Your will and ask to be graciously aligned with You.  Only by Your Hand working through us will we see Your Commands and the Great Commission become our lifelong utmost priority in Jesus’ Name Amen.
